Club's life-changing donation

The Rotary Club of Shepperton Aurora has helped fund a vital centre for the handicapped in Southern India.

Founder member John Dumbrell first visited the Khammam Artificial Limb Centre in 2005 and was astonished to learn one in 10,000 people in rural India suffers the loss of a limb each year, through snakebites or agricultural accidents.

At the time of John's visit, the state government-funded centre, which opened in 1992, had helped 3,500 people regain mobility and had had more land provided for it by ministers.

But it didn't have the funding available to purchase necessary equipment and the Rotary Club of Shepperton Aurora, in conjuction with Shepperton Rotary Club and its counterparts in Kingston and Khammam, agreed to work together to find the required £15,000.

Now, three years on, the centre has become fully operational. John said: "I am proud of the involvement of my club in this project, which demonstrates the Rotary is truly and worldwide organisation."

We'd like to hear from you.
