Taxi rank to be removed after year of non-use
An unused taxi rank that was 'wasting space' in Shepperton High Street is to be removed a year after it was installed.
Two spaces were set aside for taxis in December last year but it soon became apparent they weren't being used and in April this year, Shepperton Chamber of Commerce chairman Colin Wade suggested the scheme wasn't being successful.
He argued space that could be used for shoppers was being wasted and in May Spelthorne Council sent letters to local firms warning them that, unless the situation improved, the spaces' removal would be seriously considered.
Verbal feedback from taxi firms confirmed the demand was not there for the rank and the council's Executive Committee ruled on Tuesday night the rank would return to being peing used by the oublic from January 30.
Mr Wade welcomed the decision, saying: "This is excellent news for traders because there were two spaces next to key shops that were out of used 24 hours per day all year and, given there's virtually no demand for taxis in the village, coupled with the fact you never saw one waiting, it was a bit of a waste.
"A soon as you take away parking spaces in a place like Shepperton, it's yet something else the traders have to overcome."
The cost of removing the signs will be £150.
