County councillor warns over road safety
AFTER seeing a cyclist injured in a smash with a car, a fence flattened and a wall knocked down all in one journey, a councillor has warned drivers to be careful over the Christmas period.
On her way to Kingston last week, Staines County Councillor Denise Turner-Stewart saw the cyclist hurt in Hampton Court Way, East Molesey, just minutes after seeing the mangled fence in Hurst Road, Walton and a wall turned to rubble in Walton Bridge Road, Shepperton.
And while it is not clear when the incidents in Shepperton and Walton took place, Cllr Turner-Stewart said the trail of destruction brought home to her the dangers of rushing around over the Christmas holiday.
She added: "It was a catalogue of disaster I came across in such a short period of time. If people don't calm down and slow down a bit over the holiday people could lose their lives.
"If everybody would just stop and have a look around we would all be a bit safer. The last thing you want at Christmas time is for one of your family to be hurt."
The cyclist involved in the Hampton Court Way smash - who was a man in his 50s - was taken to Kingston Hospital with minor injuries and the road was shut for more than an hour.
Police believe the wall in Walton Bridge Road was flattened in a crash in October but are unsure when the fence in Hurst Road was damaged. However, casualty reduction officer for Spelthorne PC Mike Pritchard reiterated Cllr Turner-Stewart's warning.
He said: "Your safety as well as that of your loved ones should be of the utmost importance at this time of year and we ask you not to jeopardise it.
"Accidents happen at this time of year because motorists fail to observe the roads conditions and adjust their driving behaviour accordingly. In winter the onus is on everyone to drive even more carefully and adjust their speeds accordingly when bad weather strikes."
