Lib Dems chuffed with by-election defeat

Posted by Adam Courtney on Oct 9, 09 02:58 PM in Local Authority

SPELTHORNE'S Liberal Democrats have been buoyed by their performance at the Shepperton Green and Laleham by-election.

Their candidate, Richard Dunn, narrowly lost out to Conservative Steve Fairfax but the party says it gained significant ground on the Tories with a 15% 'swing'.

The Lib Dems polled an extra 15% from the last election, while the Tories were down 16%, which was "fantastic" according to Parliamentary candidate Mark Chapman.

He added:"There is absolutely no doubt now that the Lib Dems are the only challengers to the Conservatives locally."

Losing candidate Richard Dunn said: "Thank you to all those who took the trouble to vote on polling day. I enjoyed meeting so many residents and listening to their views and concerns."

The Liberal Democrat vote may well have increased, but this was against a background of a considerable number of misleading comments in their election literature. Liberal Democrats have already been told very firmly at Spelthorne Council meetings not to continue to mislead the public with untrue information about housing figures yet they continue to do so. They also stated that their candidate was local, but he did not live in the ward. They erroneously stated that they had campaigned against car parking charges in Laleham when they only sent in a submission about Sunbury car parks and did not even bother to turn up for the Executive discussion on the proposals.
That is just a sample of corrections to their claims, unfortunately there are plenty more; if they told the truth they would not confuse so many of the electorate into voting for them.
